Watercolour Painting

Here are some of the watercolour techniques I needed to think about in order to produce this amazing painting:

Choose a broad brush and use it to wash the paper with water
Switch to a finer brush; wet it and then dab it dry on a paper towel
Select a colour, starting with the palest
Look closely at the colours and shapes you see
Add a bit of detail to show flowers or leaves
Try not to leave any of the paper blank
Dab the last of the water off with the paper towel
Leave it in the sun to dry

Sketching at Chateau de Penthes

Yesterday we took our clipboards, some stiff white cartridge paper and a 3B drawing pencil to Chateau de Penthes. We were going to do some sketching.

I decided to draw the view of the trees. Take a look at my sketch.

Cave Painting (or drawing on the white chalk with a blackboard)

During our Unit of Inquiry on Materials, we started reading the book, 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. Stig is a caveman who lives at the bottom of an old quarry close to Barney's grandmother's house. Barney finds Stig one day when he falls through the roof of Stig's den. They become friends, even though they cannot talk to each other.

Since the quarry is no longer in use, people throw all their rubbish away down there; Stig is good at finding new ways in which to use old things.

On the same day that they cut down an enormous tree (getting warm once in the process) and then use it to start a fire (getting warm for the second time) Stig picks up a piece of charred wood and uses it to draw an amazing hunting scene on the chalk wall of the den.

Then we had a go at using charcoal and chalks to make our own hunting scene. We dusted the paper with charcoal powder and smudged it to give it a greyish background. Then we used charcoal and chalk to make our scene.

Tuesday Newsday - Where in the World?

With our current unit in mind, this week we tried to tell 'Where in the World' our news happened.

"In Bath, in the south west of England a European tree frog called Popeye has survived for days trapped inside a bag of spinach in the refrigerator! He was hiding inside a leaf."

Mapping the school

We asked ourselves; how can we show what our school looks like? After taking a walk around the school, we had a go at trying to make a record of everything; from the classrooms to the kitchen, the music room to the French rooms and the library.

Take a look at mine. "It was a little bit tricky. I drew the stairs first because later it might be hard to do the stairs. I got the difficult bit done first. I missed out Class 1i but I think I did a good job."

This is my book and its title is 'The Study of Science'. I got it in India. The unit here is on plants. First it has a list of plants. Then it says how plants are useful. It says which trees give us wood.



The book is made out of paper which comes from a tree!

This is a plane that I made yesterday.



It's made out of paper. Paper is good for planes because it kind of floats in the air.

What is it like?

My whistle
This is a whistle and it is made of plastic. It has a star at the side and it says Made in China. It is yellow and green. It makes this sound; pheep!



What is it like?
It is opaque and hard.

My ?
I don't know what this is called but if you wash your clothes and you need to dry them, you put this on a hanger so it doesn't fall off. This part is metal and it is that part that makes it move. 'It looks like a spring,' said Fiona.
The rest is made of wood.
Do you know what it is called in your language? In English it is called a peg.



What is it like?
The wood is hard and the metal is hard too and they both are not breakable.

Patterns in the classroom

I made two patterns using cogs. One goes green orange yellow, green orange yellow - and so on.....
My other pattern goes purple purple yellow blue, purple purple yellow blue - and so on.....
I made this pattern with some unifix cubes and they go brown, dark red, yellow, blue, dark red, brown, yellow, blue and so on. It is a complicated pattern.
I made four patterns on the 6th of December. They are all ab patterns. One goes purple green purple green and so on. One goes blue green blue green and so on. The other one goes blue yellow blue yellow and so on. It is taller than me.

Patterns on my socks

DANGI: Sarah's sock pattern goes white black, white black, white black, white black and so on. It is a zebra pattern but it was on a sock. It was made of wool. It's an ab pattern.

Visit to the apple farm

I saw two apples were on the tree and lots and lots of good ones were fallen off the tree. There was a lady and a man. The lady called 8 people for picking the apples. The lady gave us three kinds of apples and three kinds of applesauce to taste. And she also gave us three kinds of apple juice. We didn't get to take apples home.

It was fun when I made my man. I made his head with a cucumber and I made his stomach with a carrot. I made his hands and his legs with cauliflower. I ate a carrot and some cucumber
